ANTARCTICA AND THE ARCTIC
Antarctica is a continent surrounded by ocean, whereas the Arctic is an ocean almost completely surrounded by land.
Antarctica, the southern polar region, is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its gigantic icebergs and ice shelves are found nowhere else on the planet. The interior of Antarctica is considered the world's driest desert because the extreme cold freezes water vapour out of the air. Annual snowfall on the polar plateau is equivalent to less than 5 cm of rain. The Antarctic Ice Sheet consists of about 13.72 million sq km of permanent ice representing 90% of the world's ice. |
Antarctica has the distinction of being the most peaceful place on Earth. No wars have ever been fought on Antarctica. No sovereign country rules it. Tourists and scientists don't need a passport, a visa, or anyone's permission to visit. This "Zone of Peace" is dedicated to science, with a multinational treaty that prohibits mining or acting on land claims. |

The Arctic is the northern polar region and it too offers travellers some amazing landscapes as well as a wide variety of wildlife. Several species of animals are unique to the Arctic (e.g., polar bear, walrus, musk ox) and many species of birds have their summer home there.
There are several different Arctic cruises available to locations including Spitsbergen, Greenland and the Canadian coastline.
All of these locations are also steeped in history of heroic polar exploration and it is a unique experience to visit these places. Whichever you choose you are guaranteed a trip like no other. |
